2024 District 6 Communicator

Sarah Herman
Director of Content Strategy and Development
Arizona Western College
Yuma, AZ

How has Sarah made a significant difference in marketing at Arizona Western College (AWC)?
Sarah has conceived and overseen the execution of several long-term campaigns, including the current “We AreWestern,” which has been very well-received and driven large boosts in engagement and following. She has spearheaded other campaigns and individual campaign components that have won multiple Medallions in the last few years and a Paragon last year. Sarah was also a key member of the team for our institution-wide rebrand and continues to work on projects to improve the consistency of brand usage by others on campus.

As someone who started as a traditional student at AWC, she brings a valuable viewpoint to our team and a connection to our audiences and the realities they face.

How has Sarah worked to advance the profession as a whole?
Sarah loves to share her knowledge with others and help them grow their skills. She became known as a “LinkedIn expert” and was asked to give workshops repeatedly on campus and present at a District 6 conference. She preaches humility and agility, always affirming that keeping an open mind and finding ways for improvement and innovation are essential; and lifelong learning must also be part of working higher ed marketing.

How does Sarah demonstrate management skills?
She doesn’t just oversee two part-time employees and two student  work studies; she mentors them. Under her guidance the work studies produce a regular stream of content for AWC’s social media with the authenticity and energy that only actual students can bring to the equation. She has helped our campus photographer expand her professional skills, now interacting with stakeholders district-wide and coordinating shoots.
